The threat of strikes by thousands of airport workers which could have caused travel chaos for holidaymakers was averted tonight.

Lengthy talks between leaders of Unite and bosses from airport operator BAA led to a new pay deal which will be recommended for acceptance.
Unite said a “much improved” offer had been tabled and workers at Heathrow, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports will be urged to accept the deal.

Unite’s national officer Brian Boyd said the union was calling off the threat of strikes while workers vote on the new proposal in the next few weeks.
Details of the new deal will be announced tomorrow after workers have been told the outcome of today’s talks.
Senior executives had earlier made it clear to BAA that the aviation industry, which was battered by the volcanic ash crisis earlier in the year, could not afford a shutdown of six major airports.
If talks had failed Heathrow, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton, which between them handle more than 300,000 people a day, would have been closed by a walk out involving firemen and security staff.
It would be the sixth inflicted on airline passengers this year by Unite.
A spokesman for BAA said tonight: “The good new tonight is we have a deal where passengers can travel through our airports knowing that they are not going to be disrupted.
“Both sides have come out with a deal that we are very happy with and which is a fair reward for our staff and a deal our company can afford. We have to balance what the company can afford with what we believe the staff deserve.”
